No Skill? No Problem

Today, I am going to give my opinion on a very, very interesting topic. Have you ever heard anyone tell you 'Practise hard and success will follow'? Well, I do not believe in this theory at all, whereas most of you might be believers. I'm going to tell you why.

Nobody can but agree that every individual in this world is different. If everyone had equal capabilities, and would think the same way, there would be no balance, no breakups, no sadness and so on. Similarly, everyone has different capacities and likings in music too. There may be people who love Coldplay, others Metallica, still others Nirvana.

Some people may love playing simple chords, some may love complicated solos. There is no good, bad or better here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Let's take my example. I love playing the basic chords every guitarist or pianist learns when they first start off, and frankly speaking, I am not even that good at music theory. If you go to see, all the songs I ever composed are only on these basic chords. I have never made any complicated solos in my life. I play simple solos. Even Chris Martin, the lead singer of coldplay, does not play very complicated chords on his acoustic. However, its his music that is judged, not how difficult his chords are.

One has to understand that majority of the world population is not very understanding in terms of music. If you tell a regular person, a person who is fond of music but has never really learnt anything that you played a solo at 150bpm in the scale of F, he would certainly think you're crazy. To majority of the fans out there, music is what is good to your ear. This is the reason why many don't like heavy metal. Only musicians and a few others (by few I mean a part of the total population on Earth, not few in number) will understand this kind of music, and what efforts it takes to get it done.

Music, like I mentioned earlier, is perceived by many as what comforts your ear. They don't care about what you play on your instrument, how hard or complicated it is. The final result of your music should be good, and that is what is judged in the end.

Music is not squash or a sport, where you train hard, very very hard and your coach arranges all your state, international or national competitions. In all this, I don't say making sports your career is easy. It is very tough, but the part where you make a name for yourself is done by the coach. In Music, you may or may not practise that hard, but you for sure have to make your own way up. There are not a lot of music competitions. There may be a few, but not as many as sports competitions or others.

My dear reader, this one is for you: if you ever think that your practice is not giving as much outcome, try publicising your work. Record your music in a studio, try releasing it. People say there is a lot of competition in music and making it big is difficult. I will say this as clearly as possible: it is just a scare. It is one of those stupid stories one tells himself and tries to find out reasons which will try to prove he or she will not succeed. There is no competition if you're the best at what you do.
